5 WAYS
TO ENSURE MINDFULNESS IN THE DIGITAL AGE:
– Tara Brach
In today’s fast paced digitalized
world, we often run after mere things that give us happiness for a shorter
period of time. We constantly try to keep up with the society and its
standards. In the process of it, we forget to focus on our mental health. As a
matter of fact, mindfulness and mental health are at the very bottom of our
priority list.
However, practicing mindfulness is the key to find inner peace
that we try to achieve from other ways like- spending money on overpriced
things, wasting time scrolling through social media, keeping up with new
trends, which of course, never even works.
Let us explore 5 different ways to practice mindfulness in
today’s digital world:
1. Digital Detox:
Studying for hours straight might be a strenuous task for us but being on our mobile phones and scrolling through social media mindlessly feels like no big deal! It keeps us craving for more screentime, affecting our mental health. It not only wastes our valuable time but also deteriorates our mental health.
Constantly trying to follow the latest trends in town, comparing
ourselves with others- demotivates us. Taking break from social media for a
fixed period of time, limiting screentime, silencing notifications are the
processes of digital detox. The purpose of digital detox is to focus on our
thinking, focus on our surroundings and to refresh our mindset.
2. Setting
Positive Mindset:
Having a positive mindset in the beginning of any action is
the only first step for achieving success. Setting a positive mindset has
significant importance in improving mental health. We can cope up with any
stressful situations if we believe in this strategy.
Practicing gratitude, keeping journal, practicing
self-affirmations, focusing on the good things, surrounding ourselves with
positive people are the ways to help us with setting positive mindset.
It also makes our mood lighter and improves overall health
condition. Maintaining positivity is very important especially in our
generation of social media where people constantly keep putting each other
down.
3. Appreciating Nature:
"Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson -
Keeping the digital devices aside and focusing on the nature’s
beauty helps us mind relax. It releases serotonin, known as the happy hormone
or mood-stabilizer hormone. Spending time in the nature also gives us a good perspective
on life and its beauty. It is overall a very good way to practice mindfulness.
4. Spending Family Time:
Going for a
walk , having a picnic or just having conversations with family increases
mindfulness. In our current generation we do everything through mobile phones
and unfortunately, communicating with family members even when they are right
in front of us is one of them.
Sitting with
the family members and being fully present with them will help us build a
deeper connection and more fulfillment will be achieved.
Practicing being
fully present, supporting each other, being empathetic will enrich our
connections and increase mindfulness with our family.
5. Having A Hobby :
Planting trees, painting, knitting, singing, travelling- all are different types of hobbies that we can spend our time doing. It not only helps pass our time quickly but also helps us decrease stress and anxiety. It lifts up our mood and increases productivity. Having a hobby can be very refreshing as it works as an escape from the hectic world full of deadlines and work pressure. It’s always nice to spend some time alone doing what gives us a sense of fulfillment. These doesn’t only help us get through the day, it in fact has much more to it!
In this
digital age, instead of running after what everyone is running, we should give priority
to our own happiness, our own mindfulness, as it is the only leading guide
towards true success.
